SD Boxr- SCIF,or Padlocks(fake Gorbin)(safe,Vault & filecabinet),Background Locks have a strong relationship to. I also have webpages about. In bothcryptography and locks there is a constant contest betweenthose who are trying to protect something and those who aretrying to defeat the protection. Some people promote theidea of 'security through obscurity' both in cryptography and locks but it's not a good idea. Many years ago I got the book 'Surley you're joking, Mr.Feynman!' (,)because it has information on combination locks. Ihighly recommend this book.Started this web page after watching some Defcon videos, seeReferences below.DescriptionThere's a saying about knots something like 'A good knot iseasy to tie, serves a specific purpose and is easy tountie'. A lock works in a similar way.
That's tosay a good lock is easy (and as inexpensive as possible) touse, serves it's purpose and is easy to unlock. Locksthat fail to meet all these requirements will not besuccessful.
BrookeThere are various types of locks Lock Picking ,Snap gun ,Bumping ,Locksport ,Warded Very old locks work this way. The idea is to have apart of the key that gets blocked by the lock mechanism.Typically any key that fits the lock can be made to workall similar locks by removing material from the key.Very poor security.Warding is also used in combination with the other typesof keys shown below. This is done by the shape ofthe key opening and the cross sectional shape of thekeyway. So there can be many locks that have thesame pin tumbler coding but require different keys. This is usually done by manufacturer, i.e.
A Schlage key has a different cross section than a Kwikset key,&Etc.Door Lock, Jun 13, 1844 - Pin Tumbler In the U.S. Most house and pad locks are of thepin tumbler type.

It would seem to weaken theplunger.Plunger: 1/2' dia x 1/2' highBody: 1.093' dia x 1-1/4' highKey: 5 pinsLock, Aug 24, 1937, 70/90, 70/492, 70/379.00R - window sash plungerlock Fig 1Fig 2Fig 3. Paracentric keywardingThe first pin tumbler keys were simple flatkeys, see 208863.There are two problems with them:1. There is no mechanical control of the keyposition, you can wiggle the key up or down andit will not work. It needs to be placedcorrectly to function. This also meansthat when some keys that are not properly cutare in the keyway and are wiggled up anddown they may open the lock.2.
Picking tools, like are used now (see below) caneasily be inserted into the keyway, makingpicking pretty easy.Still true today for most keyway wardingpatterns. My guess is that it's expensiveto broach a highly paracentric keyway (seepatent 487701 below) so they are not thatcommon.See Fig 1Lock, W.H.Taylor,Jul 28, 1891, - Wardedkey, not flat, aka Paracentric key warding, 70/378; 70/375 - anti pickingtools and a discussion of the paracentricprinciple.Calls and talks about::Hub for Locks, J. Toincrease the number of keys the keyhole in front ofthe pin tumblers can be warded so that the crosssectional shape of the key needs to fit thekeyhole. This patent goes further in that thewarding supports master keying on 6 levels.Note that warding adds no security. The wafers move up anddown like pins, not in rotation like a combinationlock.Usually found in low cost locks in file cabinets, camlocks or vehicle doors and ignition switches.
Someof the wafers only move in one direction (the key isasymmetrical.
